SECL’s OBR crosses 100 MCuM in this financial year
This is the fastest 100 MCuM OBR achieved by the company since inception
SECL, one of the leading coal companies in the country, has achieved 100 MCuM Overburden Removal (OBR) in FY 23-24. This is the fastest-ever 100 MCuM OBR achieved in the company’s history. Earlier, in the last financial year ‘22-23, the company had achieved 100 MCuM OBR in the month of September. Recently, the company recorded the fastest ever coal dispatch of 50 million tons.
In the coal industry, coal can be extracted only by removing layers of soil, stone, etc. in open cast mines and this layer is called overburden. The removal of this overburden is known as “overburden removal” (OBR) and involves huge costs. OBR is an important performance parameter as it exposes the coal seam for future production at short notice.
The overburden process involves removing a huge amounts of soil after blasting to reach the coal seam. For this, SECL uses 42 cubic meter shovels and 240-ton dumpers, which are one of the largest machines used in the coal industry in the whole of Asia. With the use of these machines, the company is meeting the energy needs of the nation by removing maximum overburden in a short time and ensuring continuous mining of coal.
The company had achieved record 264 MCuM OBR in the last financial year 22-23 with a growth of 35% and for the current financial year the company has set a target of 310 MCuM OBR. The company is on track to achieve the target of 200 MT coal production for this FY.
