Raipur chhattisgarh VISHESH New Delhi, 27 September 2024: Chhattisgarh’s Forest and Climate Change Department, in collaboration with Vibgyor N.E. Foundation, Prajna Pravah, NIT Raipur, and Amity University Chhattisgarh, is set to host the 1st Chhattisgarh Green Summit 2024 from October 3-5 at the Deendayal Auditorium in Raipur. This pre-LokManthan Edition event will bring together key stakeholders to discuss and promote environmental sustainability and the integration of Lok traditions in the development discourse. LokManthan – started in 2016 and aimed at bringing together thousands of artists, thinkers, intellectuals and social activists from across the country – is a cultural mahakumbh that reshapes narratives and equips the nation to embrace its civilizational role.
The Summit will commence on October 3rd with an opening session, followed by technical sessions focusing on the interrelation between forests and communities, Indian forestry and ecosystem services. Experts will share insights on ecological restoration and the ecosystem benefits provided by forests, aiming to build a sustainable model that supports both ecological balance and community welfare.
Throughout the three-day event, attendees will also have the opportunity to explore exhibitions and workshops showcasing traditional foods, tribal crafts, 100+ Janjati music instruments, medicinal plants and local art forms. Live performances, Janjati Instrumental Music of Chhattisgarh, interactive sessions on tribal storytelling, and demonstrations of traditional medicine practices will provide a vibrant cultural experience, celebrating Chhattisgarh’s rich heritage.
Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, Vishnu Deo Sai, will inaugurate the Summit, while Kedar Kashyap, Minister for Forest and Climate Change, Chhattisgarh will be the guest of honour at the summit’s inauguration. Padmashri Jadav Payeng, The Forest Man of India (Assam), Padmashri Chami Murmu, Sahyogi Mahila Mandal, Saraikela (Jharkhand), Padmashri Popatrao Pawar, Sarpanch- Hirwe Bazar (Maharashtra) and Padmashri Hemchandra Majhi will lead discussions on sustainability through Lok tradition.
Emphasizing the importance of preserving the state’s natural and cultural heritage, Bitapi Basumatary Luhoe, Secretary of Vibgyor N.E. V. The second day of the summit will centre around policy interventions for sustainable utilisation of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) and the impact of climate change on forests and communities. Discussions will also cover technological advancements in forest management, promoting responsible ecotourism, and empowering forest-dwelling communities through sustainable practices.
Prof N.V.Ramana Rao, Director, NIT, Raipur, noted the institute’s commitment to environmental education and research. “We are proud to support the Chhattisgarh Green Summit 2024, which aligns with our mission to foster environmental awareness and sustainable development. This event will provide invaluable insights and collaborative opportunities to enhance the sustainable management of our state’s natural resources,” he said.
On the final day, the Summit will address urban environmental challenges, concentrating on wetland restoration and greening urban landscapes. Experts will discuss the role of urban forestry in mitigating climate change and explore the future of green initiatives for sustainable cities. The event will conclude with the declaration of an action plan, outlining recommendations for sustainable development in Chhattisgarh.
Prof. Dr. Piyush Kant Pandey, Vice Chancellor of Amity University, Raipur, stressed the need for community participation in conservation efforts. “The Chhattisgarh Green Summit 2024 is an essential step towards integrating traditional knowledge and community voices into the discourse on environmental sustainability. The Summit is dedicated to aiding local communities to take an active role in conservation efforts, ensuring that their perspectives are integral to the sustainable development of the state,” he said.
